This chapter focuses on Gray’s life after his retirement as bishop of Mississippi on September 30, 1993. He immediately took up new responsibilities, namely as interim chaplain at Sewanee for the 1993–94 academic year. Gray fulfilled his term as chancellor in 1997, and during the following years served in a variety of part-time posts, including giving his services as what he referred to as the position of “rent-a-bishop” for the Diocese of Central Florida during the busy Lenten season. By 2008, Gray complained that his memory was not what it once was, but he continued an active life as a clergyman, husband, father, grandfather, and, by then, great-grandfather.
