This chapter examines the question of why a man like Gray, who as a child lived a life of relative privilege, sheltered from all but the most genteel and softly institutionalized forms of the South’s racism, was willing to risk his vocation, and even his life to speak and act against the racism from which he, as white man, in many ways benefited. He attributes his civil rights activities in the 1950s and 1960s to his realization how truly blessed he has been.

Keywords:   vocation, racism, white man, American South
